First Baptist Church of Huntington
Believed to be the oldest African American congregation in Huntington, First Baptist Church was established as the Mt. Olive Baptist and originally met at a small church on Norway Avenue near present-day Spring Hill Cemetery. In the late 1880s, the congregation changed their name and grew over many decades before they moved to the current location in the 1960s. The original building that stood at its current location was destroyed in a fire in 1965, but the congregation worked to gather the resources and funding that went into the construction of the current church building shortly thereafter.
