Art Careers: Public Art, a mini conference

Marshall University’s School of Art & Design is pleased to announce Art Careers: Public Art, a mini conference taking place on Friday, Oct. 18 at the Visual Arts Center. This event, free and open to the public, will highlight the work of regional public artists and feature guest Becky Borlan, a Baltimore-based artist and Visiting Joan C. Edwards Distinguished Professor in the Arts.
Borlan was selected through an open call for Reinventing Central City: Huntington, WV public art commission, where she will create two sculptures for Central City Gazebo in the West Huntington Neighborhood. This project, funded by T-Mobile’s Hometown Grant program and sponsored by RenewAll and the City of Huntington, is part of a larger revitalization effort for the area.

Schedule of Events on Friday, Oct. 18
8:30 a.m. – Catered Networking, Visual Arts Center, second-floor flex space
9:00 a.m. – Public Art Overview and Resources Visual Arts Center, room 209
10:00 a.m. – Panel Discussion featuring: Becky Borlan, Jonathan Cox, Frederick Hightower, Matt Smith, and Nichole Westfall Visual Arts Center, room 209
11:30 a.m. – Exhibition Reception for Public Art in Process in the Pneumatic Gallery and first floor atrium, Visual Arts Center
12:30 p.m. – Refreshing The Jewell mural, created by Sassa Wilkes and Huntington Pride at the intersection of 4thAve. and 10th St.

Whether or not one attends the mini conference, an artist talk featuring Borlan will be held on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 5 p.m. in room 209 of the Visual Arts Center. Both the artist talk and the Friday panel discussion will be streamed online at https://www.marshall.edu/livestream/. No registration is required and both events are free and open to the public.
