Writers Can Read

This month’s Writers Can Read series will feature authors Dr. Christina Fisanick and Sheila McEntee reading from their work. The event is free and open to the public and will take place on Monday, May 19 at 7 P.M. in Heritage Station at 210 11th Street in downtown Huntington.
Dr. Christina Fisanick is the author or editor of more than 30 books and dozens of articles, essays, and poems. Her latest book, Pulling the Thread: Untangling Wheeling History, is a collection of essays focusing on little known stories from Wheeling’s past. She is currently working on an historic novel which takes place at Fostoria Glass in Moundsville, WV in the years immediately following WWII and co-editing an anthology, “We Are Here!”: New Writing from Northern Appalachian (forthcoming from University of Kentucky Press). Sheila McEntee is a writer, editor, and naturalist living in Charleston, West Virginia. Her essays have been featured in Stonecrop Review, The Brevity Blog, Still: The Journal, Woods Reader, A COVID-19 Anthology, and Voices on Unity: Coming Together, Falling Apart, among other publications, and also aired on West Virginia Public Radio. Sheila wrote for Wonderful West Virginia magazine for many years and was the publication’s editor from 2006 to 2014. She was raised in Cheverly, Maryland, and Hingham, Massachusetts, and moved to West Virginia in 1989. The “Writers Can Read” open mic night reading series takes place on the third Monday of each month (all year) from 7:00-8:30 in Heritage Station at 210 11th Street in downtown Huntington, West Virginia. The event normally features two award-winning, published authors that serve as “featured readers” to begin the event each month. Previous featured readers have included: Marc Harshman, Denise Giardina, Crystal Wilkinson, Jonathan Corcoran, Doug Van Gundy, Robert Gipe, Nick White, and others. Afterwards, the mic is open to anyone in the audience that would like to share a creative work.
