An Evening with Friends

November 29, 2018 @ 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm

The Marshall Wind Symphony will present its final performance of the semester, “An Evening with Friends,” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at Smith Recital Hall. Under the direction of Dr. Adam Dalton, the concert will feature several guests and regional premieres of new music.
The ensemble will kick off the evening with a regional premiere of Tyler S. Grant’s “Banner of the Sky,” which Grant will conduct and which was inspired by the painting by Frederic Edwin Church of the same name.
The Wind Symphony will also perform the newly released “Classical Concerto for Tenor Saxophone and Wind Ensemble,” joined by world-renowned artist James Houlik, a leading saxophonist globally, whose pioneering efforts have resulted in the composition of more than 85 new concert works for the instrument.
The second half of the concert will focus on the Wind Symphony’s yearlong theme of Music for Social Change and will begin with David Maslanka’s tone poem “Hymn for World Peace.” The evening will conclude with a unique work by Peter Van Zandt Lane, titled “Hivemind.”
As part of the Marshall University Concert Series, the event is free and open the public.
