Back in My Day: Grandparents Weekend at HCM

September 11 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Huntington Children’s Museum is inviting children, grandparents and grownups of all ages to step back in time during Back in My Day: Grandparents Weekend, September 11–13. Admission to the Museum will be free for everyone all three days.

Throughout the weekend, families will encounter vintage and obsolete technology stationed around the Museum, giving children a chance to discover objects that were once part of everyday life while encouraging grownups to share their own memories and experiences.

Children might discover how to dial a rotary phone, how families watched movies before streaming, where people found answers before Google, or how photographs were taken before everyone carried a camera in their pocket. Tables will feature items related to communication, entertainment, toys and games, daily life, and finding information before the internet.

But Museum Executive Director Raine Klover says the objects themselves are only part of the experience.

“Children are naturally curious when they encounter something they’ve never seen before, but the real fun begins when a grownup says, ‘Oh, I remember this!’” said Klover. “We want these objects to spark stories. A rotary phone or VHS tape becomes an opportunity for a child to learn something about the grownups in their lives.”

Conversation prompts throughout the Museum will encourage adults to tell children about their own childhoods, from favorite toys and television shows to how they communicated with friends and researched school projects. Families will also be invited to contribute to a collaborative Memory Garden by sharing some of the things that made their own childhoods bloom.

The weekend is designed to celebrate Grandparents Day while welcoming all families and generations to participate. Children do not need to attend with a grandparent to enjoy the event.

Back in My Day: Grandparents Weekend will take place Friday, September 11 through Sunday, September 13, from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. each day at Huntington Children’s Museum, 1700 Washington Avenue in Huntington. Admission is free for all guests throughout the weekend.
